September, 2006

The faculty and staff and I find it hard to believe that we are halfway through the first quarter and progress reports and parent conferences are upon us already. Hopefully you are picking up your daughter’s progress report and this parent pack at parent conferences this evening, September 28. The Beaumont teachers are eager to conference with you on your daughter’s progress. Guidance counselors are also available this evening. This communication between school and home is important for your daughter’s success in school.

The first quarter grading period ends October 27 with exams days on October 26 and 27. Report cards should be mailed out after November 3. Please remember that in most classes, new and more difficult material will be presented as the quarter progresses. Therefore a high grade on the progress report does not insure a high grade at the end of the quarter.  Please continue to monitor and discuss progress with your daughter as the quarter progresses. Lastly, this progress report marks the halfway point of the first quarter. First quarter grades earn a .50 credit and are recorded on the permanent record. Consequently, if a student fails the first quarter of work, she will be required to attend summer school or a school-approved program to make up the .50 credit. Therefore, whether the grade is a good one or a poor one, it is important for both parents and students to reflect on the progress report grades as an indicator of the permanent record grade. At any point during the quarter, if you have questions about your daughter’sprogress, please contact the appropriate teacher or guidance counselor. Also, do not forget about Parent Connect---the “on line” way to keep informed. If you are not connected, please email Mrs. Pearson to get your password. She can be reached on line at lpearson@beaumontschool.org.

Congratulations to Laura Manson, Tina Bongorno, and Catherine Augustine who are Beaumont’s National Merit Semi-Finalists. Their scores on the 2005 PSAT placed them among the top 16,000 students across the nation (less than 1% of all seniors in the U.S.). Laura, Tina and Catherine will continue on in the scholarship competition seeking finalist status and scholarship opportunities. We are so proud of these students. Jennifer Haag, Victoria Honton, Anna Mohr, Caitlin Shea are National Merit Commended Students. Their score on the 2005 PSAT, last fall, placed them among 34,000 Commended Students nationwide who are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2007 competition of merit scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than one million students who entered the competition by taking the 2005 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. We congratulate these students on their academic accomplishments. Congratulations to Jenny O’Donnell who served on the teen board of the Junior Fair Board for the Geauga County Fair and to Elizabeth Babick who was the fourth runner up in the Miss Teen Ohio USA pageant. Don’t forget if you are a sophomore or freshman parent that you must attend one of the parent education programs that have been planned by the Parent Advisory Group and the Administration of the school before your daughter is allowed to purchase a bid for Fall Fling. The second program will be held on October 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the SLC theatre. This program will be presented by Professionals in Partnership for Prevention and will include information about teenage use of drugs and alcohol from the perspective of a drug/ alcohol counselor, a magistrate, and a medical professional. If you are a parent of a freshman or a sophomore and did not attend the previous session, please plan to attend this one. Parent attendance will be taken and tickets to Fall Fling sold on October 5.
