Bishop Nelson J. Perez: Celebrates Mass with Beaumont

Beaumont School welcomed Bishop Nelson J. Perez to preside over our All-School Liturgy on the day following Oscar Romero’s canonization in Rome. Students, faculty, staff, and guests participated in the inspiring Mass about the life and example of not only Oscar Romero but also that of the Salvadoran martyrs, including former Beaumont guidance counselor, Sister Dorothy Kazel, OSU.

Bishop Perez began his homily by asking the students, “What makes Beaumont different, what distinguishes Beaumont from other schools?” The students enthusiastically answered: the community, the education, the teachers, the athletics, the music, the arts program, Chef Bo’s chocolate chip cookies.

The Bishop pointed out that our faith distinguishes us most of all and is what forms our hearts and minds. Channeling the Ursuline educational charism, he told them, “We change the world one person, one moment, and one place at a time.”

Citing Saint Oscar Romero as someone who changed the world, Bishop Perez reminded us that his life had been given as a gift, and that he was someone who changed the world with a courageous and generous heart by lifting his voice for the people of El Salvador and not succumbing to fear.

Bishop Perez encouraged the young women of Beaumont to recognize their own power and to go out and, as our vision statement says, change the world.
